BTS: “Incinerator Getaway” – Building the Set

While creating photorealistic sets in 3D can be fun and a great way “access” locations you would otherwise be unable to shoot in (think mummy’s tomb) nothing beats working with a real set. Just as with “HELLO, JOHNNY…”, for this shot we elected to design and build the simple flat that would serve as our set.

Just as with any set, physical or virtual, it all begins with a bit of research and then putting pen to paper. Once it’s all drawn out you can begin construction. We chose a double flat set up, using two standard 4×8 flats that were clamped together to create the wall. Once it was in place we could then install the chute door, the practical light and apply paint and wallpaper. Once that was all done, we added a good deal of “schmutz” to properly age the set.

I hope you enjoy this peak behind the curtain. Stay tuned for more BTS photos as well as the finished shot, all of which are coming soon!
