BTS: Set Design for “The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb!”

I love big productions. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the simplest of portraits as much as anyone, but there is something about working on a big set that just gets the adrenaline racing! If I could, I would always work on purpose-built set, either location based or in a studio. Unfortunately, I don’t always have the resources to match my imagination.

For the next shot in my “PULP!” series, I need to construct a mummy’s tomb for a group of intrepid explorers. When I was younger I worked a lot in miniature and have thought of going that route, however, that can be INCREDIBLY time consuming to do right, especially without a full team of model builders. So for this shot we will be constructing the set in Maya, a 3D modeling program used to create CGI effects for the movie industry. Once that’s done and the background plate created, we will shoot the talent in-studio and composite them into the scene.

Even though the set will be constructed in virtual space, the same level of planning needs to be done prior to beginning the “build”. In this case all the stonework needs to be created to scale. Once that’s done we can worry about the dressing our set, but that’s a post for another day.
